US takes first step toward leaving the UN
Washington, February 21 (Hibya) - According to a report by FOX TV, Republican lawmakers have launched an effort to withdraw the United States from the United Nations, citing concerns that the international humanitarian and human rights organization has failed to support American interests and align with President Donald Trump’s "America First" agenda.
Senator Mike Lee introduced the "Complete Withdrawal from the UN - 2025 UN Debacle Act" on Thursday, which would terminate US membership in the UN and its affiliated organizations, as well as cut funding to these groups. Senator Marsha Blackburn is co-sponsoring the measure in the upper house.
Representative Chip Roy is set to introduce the measure in the House of Representatives on Friday, arguing that the UN and its institutions have not advanced American interests.
Lee told Fox News Digital on Thursday, "The United Nations has become a platform for tyrants and a mechanism to attack America and its allies. We must stop funding it. President Trump revolutionized our foreign policy by prioritizing America first, and we must withdraw from this sham organization and focus on real alliances that keep our nation secure and prosperous."
According to the US foreign policy think tank Council on Foreign Relations, in 2022, the US contributed over $18 billion to the UN, more than any other country, making up about one-third of the UN’s total budget.
Roy told Fox News Digital on Thursday, "The United Nations enjoys American tax dollars while frequently undermining our interests, attacking our allies, and empowering our adversaries."
He added: "What has the United Nations achieved? Despite all the money and attention, this corrupt globalist organization has failed for decades to prevent wars, genocides, human rights violations, or even pandemics."
