33 killed in a prison riot in Mozambique
Stockholm, December 26 (Hibya) - According to Aljazeera, authorities reported that at least 33 people were killed, 15 injured, and over 1,500 prisoners escaped in a suspected riot at a prison in Mozambique's capital.
Police chief Bernardino Rafael stated on Wednesday that 150 of the escaped prisoners from the Maputo prison were recaptured.
Mozambique is experiencing increasing internal unrest linked to the controversial October elections that extended the ruling Frelimo party's time in power. Opposition groups and their supporters claim the voting was rigged.
Rafael blamed protests outside the prison for inciting the riot, while Justice Minister Helena Kida told the local private broadcaster Miramar TV that the unrest began inside the prison and had no connection to external protests.
In a press briefing, Rafael said: "Subsequent clashes near the prison resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to 15 others."
The identities of the deceased and injured remain unknown.
According to a report by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), inmates overpowered guards, seized AK-47 rifles, and thus managed to escape from the prison.
Mozambican journalist Clemente Carlos told SABC that the escapees likely took advantage of the Christmas holiday season, during which fewer guards were on duty compared to regular workdays.
Adriano Nuvunga, director of Mozambique's Center for Democracy and Human Rights, wrote on X on Wednesday: "This shocking incident raises urgent questions about Mozambique's security situation and justice system."
"Now, more than ever, it is critical for authorities, civil society, and international partners to collaborate to ensure public safety and address the systemic challenges that led to this situation."
Meanwhile, it was confirmed that at least 21 people, including two police officers, were killed in two days of violence on Monday and Tuesday triggered by election results. The violence included attacks on gas stations, police stations, and banks.
According to the election monitoring group Plataforma Decide, the death toll in the country has risen to 151 since October 21.
