Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a condolence message following the death of former politician Bruce Baird.

Albanese said, “With the passing of Bruce Baird, Australia has lost a true gentleman and a true parliamentarian.”

Noting that Baird served as a Liberal Party member of parliament at both state and federal levels, Albanese said Baird also served as Transport Minister in the Greiner-led New South Wales government.

Referring to Baird’s work in that role, Albanese said, “He managed his portfolio so successfully that years later I was pleased to appoint him as the inaugural Chair of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Board.”

Albanese noted that Baird also achieved significant success as the minister responsible for Sydney’s bid for the 2000 Olympic Games, saying, “Whatever role he held, whether in Parliament or leading organizations such as the Tourism and Transport Forum and the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council, he carried out his duties with distinction, principle and an unwavering sense of humanity.”

Albanese said the respect and admiration for Baird transcended political boundaries and offered his condolences to his family.

Albanese concluded his message by saying, “Our heartfelt condolences go to his beloved children Julia, Steve and Mike. May Bruce Baird rest in a peace as beautiful as the peace he felt every time he entered the sea at Manly.”
