Aleppo residents return after clashes between government and SDF
Stockholm, Jan. 12 (Hibya) – As fighting eased on Sunday, residents are cautiously returning to disputed neighborhoods in northern Aleppo.
Although the area is now under the control of government forces, unexploded ordnance continues to threaten civilian safety.
In Achrafiye and surrounding areas, ambulances and first-aid teams have mobilized to assist those trapped during days of fighting, clear debris, and search for mines.
The clashes erupted earlier this week after talks between the government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) stalled over plans to integrate their units into the national army. Government forces have since taken control of Achrafiye and Beni Zaid.
While gunfire has stopped, security teams say residents will not be able to fully return until unexploded devices are removed, leaving many families in uncertainty.
At least 22 people were killed and more than 140,000 displaced; the worst clashes since late 2024, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
