As Earthquake Toll in Myanmar Rises, China Sends Rescue Teams
Following yesterday’s earthquakes in Myanmar, the death toll has reportedly reached 1,007 and the number of injured has risen to 2,389.
Authorities in Myanmar reported that many people remain missing after the disaster.
In heavily affected regions such as Mandalay, Sagaing, and Naypyidaw, roads and bridges were damaged, and hundreds of buildings were flattened.
Due to severe shortages of medical and relief supplies, some hospitals were forced to stop accepting the injured; all flights were suspended at Mandalay International Airport due to runway damage; and several roads were closed to traffic.
China sends rescue teams to Myanmar
At the request of the Myanmar government, the Chinese government dispatched the China Search and Rescue (CSAR) team to the country this morning. The 82-member team brought rescue equipment and supplies with them.
Additionally, immediately after the quake, a 37-member team from Yunnan province arrived in Yangon, becoming the first foreign search and rescue team to reach the country.
Personnel from the Ram Rescue Team departed from Hangzhou to Myanmar and Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, which was also affected by the quake.
The Yunnan branch of China’s Blue Sky Rescue (BSR) team also arrived in Myanmar with emergency supplies and immediately began rescue operations.
It was reported that China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region would also send a search and rescue team to Myanmar.
