Australian Foreign Minister Wong met with her Chinese counterpart
Johannesburg, February 21 (Hibya) – Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as part of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
Australian Foreign Minister Wong announced that she met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in South Africa.
Wong emphasized that a calm and stable dialogue with China helps advance Australia’s interests and advocate for issues important to Australians, stating:
“I expressed Australia’s expectations regarding safe and professional military conduct, consular cases, human rights, and other concerns. I also requested an explanation regarding Chinese naval vessels conducting live-fire drills without prior notification.”
Wong added that they also discussed the Middle East, Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Pacific, and sovereignty, rules, and laws important to Australia. “Australia will always cooperate with China as much as possible, express disagreements when necessary, and act in accordance with its national interests,” she said.
