Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei commented on statements made by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Baqaei argued that Rutte’s statement supported claims that Europe had actively and knowingly participated in the US and Israeli attack on Iran, saying that the European Union, its member states and NATO members should be held accountable for the political, military, logistical or other support they provided for the war against Iran.

Baqaei said that such support may have contributed to deaths and destruction and stated that the effects of the war were still continuing. He added that European citizens had the right to demand explanations from their governments regarding decisions to support or participate in the war.

Baqaei also argued that rising fuel prices and other economic difficulties caused by the war should be examined in the context of the role played by European governments in enabling and supporting the war. He said the role of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as well as the steps taken within the scope of his authority, should also be subject to review and investigation.
