Death toll from earthquake in China rises to 53
Beijing, January 7 (Hibya) — By noon on Tuesday, it was confirmed that 53 people were killed and 62 injured after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region, southwest China.
The China Earthquake Administration sent a working team to the area and launched a level II emergency response to assist disaster relief efforts.
Central authorities dispatched approximately 22,000 relief items, including cotton tents, cotton coats, quilts, and folding beds, as well as specialized materials for high-altitude and cold areas, to the earthquake-affected region. Over 1,500 local firefighters and rescue workers were also deployed.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered comprehensive rescue operations to save lives and minimize casualties following the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake.
Xi emphasized the importance of strengthening earthquake monitoring and early warnings, immediately allocating emergency materials, accelerating the repair of damaged infrastructure, ensuring residents' basic needs are met, and guaranteeing a safe and warm winter for all.
