EU expected to impose import duties on Chinese electric vehicles
Brussels, June 10 (Hibya) - The EU is expected to notify China this week that it will impose tariffs on electric vehicle imports, sparking a potential summer trade war with Beijing.
The official pre-announcement of tariffs could come as early as Wednesday, following a lengthy investigation into state subsidies for China's car production, which is expected to conclude that massive support continues to be given to the electric vehicle sector.
Chinese manufacturers are already preparing for new import duties. Still, experts predict Beijing will retaliate with countermeasures that could hit a range of EU exports to the country, from cognac to dairy products.
Meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Paris last month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that “the world cannot absorb China's surplus production” and said the EU would “not hold back” in protecting industry and jobs within the bloc.
