EU suspends high-level meetings with Georgian leadership
Tbilisi, October 4 (Hibya) - EU Ambassador to Tbilisi Pavel Gerchinsky said that the European Union institutions have decided to suspend high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian leadership.
"We, as the European Union, have decided not to hold high-level contacts with the current government of Georgia, and therefore, there have been no high-level visits to Georgia, there have been no high-level meetings with representatives of the Georgian government in recent months," Pavel Gerchinsky said.
According to the diplomat, the European Union will be ready to cooperate with any government elected by the people in the autumn parliamentary elections if it aims for European integration.
"If Georgia becomes a one-party state, it will become a country where political opposition will be banned, where civil society will have to leave Georgia to function. Suppose fundamental human rights, including the rights of minorities, are not protected. In that case, Georgia will not be able to become a member of the European Union today or tomorrow," the ambassador said.
Relations between Tbilisi and the West deteriorated after the Transcaucasian country adopted the law on "Transparency of Foreign Influence." This document provides for the registration of non-profit legal entities and media outlets whose income—especially more than 20 percent—comes from abroad. In response, Western countries began to threaten Georgia.
Opposition parties consider the new norm similar to the Russian law on foreign agents. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called these statements absurd, reminding that the first country to develop a system for combating foreign agents was the United States.
In particular, at the end of May, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a comprehensive review of cooperation with the Transcaucasian country. Washington also imposed visa restrictions on citizens of the republic, which the US called "accomplices in undermining democracy in Georgia" and began to review all cooperation programs with Tbilisi.
