Chancellor Scholz admired Vladimir Kara-Murza's strength and courage in his tireless efforts for Russia's democratic future.

Scholz reported that they managed to secure Kara-Murza's release during the prisoner exchange in August and met with him today.

Vladimir Kara-Murza is a contributing columnist at the Washington Post. A Russian politician, author and historian, he was imprisoned in Russia from April 2022 until August 2024 for speaking out against the war on Ukraine. He won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2024.

A longtime colleague of opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, he was a candidate for the Russian Parliament and served as deputy leader of the People’s Freedom Party.
