Ghebreyesus: Cholera outbreak in Sudan has spread to 12 states
Geneva, June 3 (Hibya) – WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that since July 2024, the cholera outbreak in Sudan has spread to 12 states across the country.
Dr. Ghebreyesus said the outbreak has affected 71,000 people and caused over 1,770 deaths.
He stated that WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health with a vaccination campaign using 115,000 existing doses and that, along with UNICEF, they delivered an additional 2.9 million doses to Port Sudan two days ago.
Ghebreyesus added that the organization has also provided medical supplies and ambulances to treat cholera patients, and said:
“These efforts have already helped reduce new infections and deaths. But without access, we cannot reach everyone at risk. We need a ceasefire so our teams can deliver vaccines and save lives. Peace is the best medicine.”
