Interfax: Turkey may join a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine
Moscow, March 13 (Hibya) - According to Interfax, Turkey may send its troops to participate in a possible peacekeeping mission in Ukraine as part of its efforts to strengthen its influence on the EU.
According to sources familiar with the matter: "Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan seeks closer defense and economic cooperation with the EU in exchange for security, while Europe is looking for ways to reduce its dependence on Washington. This could include the participation of Turkish troops in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine."
Sources indicate that Ankara is considering the possibility of a non-combat mission, where the Turkish side would assist in monitoring the situation on the contact line in Ukraine.
According to the sources, Turkey's increased role in ensuring regional security could accelerate negotiations on updating the customs union between the EU and Turkey and discussions on granting Turkish citizens visa-free travel to the EU.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported that the UK and France are developing plans to deploy 30,000 troops in Ukraine following a peace agreement. However, it is believed that this initiative could face significant challenges without potential support from the US.
