Israeli army says it is "checking" whether Yahya Sinwar was killed in Gaza
Stockholm, October 17 (Hibya) - According to a statement obtained by Al Jazeera from the Israeli army and intelligence services, the IDF said they targeted a building and killed three Hamas figures, one of whom was indeed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
Sinwar was named as the leader of the Hamas movement after Israel is believed to have killed Ismail Haniyeh in Iran earlier this year.
Emphasizing that there is no confirmation, Al Jazeera wrote that they have not heard from Hamas
According to Al Jazeera, even Israeli military sources say that it could take hours to verify from their side whether this assassination was indeed successful. Still, if it is true, this would be the second Hamas movement leader to be killed during this war.
Meanwhile, the Times of Israel reported that a senior Israeli official said there was a “high probability” that one of the three militants the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it killed in Gaza on Thursday was Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
The Times of Israel said, “According to reports, officials believed with great certainty that the body was Sinwar's, but a definitive identification was expected to take several hours.
The three bodies were taken for DNA testing and will also undergo dental and fingerprint checks, the reports said. Israel has both Sinwar's fingerprints and dental records from his time in prison.”
The publication also reported that unverified photos were posted on social media that appeared to show the lifeless body of a man who resembled Sinwar.
