Jetten: We will continue to address the consequences of the slavery past
Amsterdam, October 12 (Hibya) - Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten said he had received a proposal for a concrete action plan aimed at addressing the impact of the country’s slavery past, adding that efforts would continue to raise awareness, acknowledge the past and strengthen communities.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten met with representatives of "Zwart Manifest" to discuss how apologies over the slavery past could be translated into concrete steps. Jetten said that following his visit to The Black Archives before the summer, he met with the representatives this time at the ministry.
Jetten said the representatives had presented him with a comprehensive action plan proposal under the National Roadmap for Healing that he announced at the National Slavery Past Commemoration Ceremony. He thanked them for the proposal and said he would provide a detailed response later.
Jetten said the Dutch government would focus in the coming years on the slavery past and its complex effects that continue into the present day, adding that efforts would be made to raise awareness, acknowledge the past, address the consequences of slavery and strengthen communities.
Jetten said dialogue would continue with communities made up of descendants of enslaved people as well as with society as a whole, emphasizing that they remained committed to taking responsibility for injustices committed in the past.
