Lazzarini: There are accounts of inhumane treatment in Israeli detention centres
New York, July 31 (Hibya) – UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated that UNRWA staff detained by Israel and subsequently released described their experiences in Israeli detention centres as inhumane treatment.
Lazzarini noted that they met with individuals detained by Israel and subsequently released earlier this year. He said:
"They told us about mistreatment and torture, such as deprivation of sleep and food, denial of access to toilets and being forced to wear diapers, threats of harm to family members, verbal and physical abuse, coercion to confess and to sign documents in a language they did not understand. Among these documents were those concerning relations between UNRWA and Palestinian armed groups."
UNRWA Commissioner-General Lazzarini said: "These violations of international human rights and humanitarian law must be investigated and stopped".
