Lazzarini: UNRWA is essential for the provision of public services in Gaza
Munich, February 14 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), emphasized that the agency plays an indispensable role in humanitarian and social stability in Gaza.
During his engagements at the Munich Security Conference (MSC 2026), Lazzarini highlighted the agency’s activities in Gaza and its strategic importance in the peace process.
Sharing figures about the agency’s operational capacity on the ground, Lazzarini said, “We have the necessary workforce, expertise, and the trust of the community. UNRWA staff provide around 18,000 medical consultations every day and play a critical role in supporting public health by vaccinating children, supplying clean water, and managing waste. We have returned more than 60,000 children to in-person education and provided them with psychosocial support.”
Stressing that a ceasefire alone will not ensure lasting peace in the region, Lazzarini stated, “A ceasefire alone does not guarantee peace or stability. Palestinians in Gaza have the right to access healthcare, education, and other critical social services, and UNRWA has a unique capacity to deliver these services.”
