Meloni commemorates miners who died in the Marcinelle disaster 69 years ago
Rome, August 8 (Hibya) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commemorated the 262 miners who lost their lives in the Bois du Cazier coal mine disaster in Marcinelle, Belgium, on August 8, 1956, stating, "Italy will never forget this tragedy."
Meloni recalled that 136 of the victims were Italian citizens and emphasized that the incident was one of the largest mining disasters in European history. She noted that the miners died while fulfilling their duties far from their homes and loved ones.
The Prime Minister said that the “Day of Remembrance for Victims of Italian Labor Migration Worldwide” was established thanks to the efforts of the late Minister Mirko Tremaglia and is dedicated to Italian workers who died while working abroad.
Meloni also recalled Tremaglia’s words during his 2001 visit to the mine:
“Marcinelle is a symbol of the suffering, labor, and spilled blood of Italians and their European brothers working around the world. This event showed the greatness of a work humanism that recognizes the dignity and equal rights of every person.”
