NBC: Hegseth told Kyiv about the possible withdrawal of some US troops from Europe
Washington, February 20 (Hibya) – Citing US government officials, NBC News reported that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth privately told Ukrainian officials that the US is considering withdrawing a large portion of its forces from Europe.
On Monday, Financial Times columnist Gideon Rachman, citing anonymous sources, reported that US President Donald Trump might decide to withdraw US troops from the Baltic states during negotiations with Russia regarding the Ukraine conflict. He warned that this could have serious consequences not only for Ukraine but also for Europe as a whole.
According to the journalist, the US is no longer perceived by Europeans as a "reliable ally".
The article states, "Hegseth surprised Ukrainians when, during his meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, he mentioned that the Trump administration was considering withdrawing a significant portion of US forces from Europe."
NBC added that this information has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials.
According to the TV network, such a move is being considered due to the US's desire to focus more on the Asia-Pacific region and the US-Mexico border.
However, the Pentagon stated that Hegseth had not made any official statements regarding the withdrawal of US troops from Europe.
