Over a hundred killed in the storm in the Philippines
Manila, October 27 (Hibya) - At least eighty-five people have died in the Philippines as a result of Typhoon Trami, which struck the country on Friday. Authorities fear that more people may have died, as forty more people are still missing. Half a million people were forced to evacuate their homes.
The storm was accompanied by heavy rains that led to floods and landslides. In some areas, two months' worth of rain fell in just one day.
The President of the Philippines stated that flood defenses in some provinces are unable to cope with such intense rainfall. He also mentioned that his government would immediately begin strengthening the country's flood defenses in response to the threats posed by climate warming.
Rescue operations are ongoing, but some areas remain closed due to landslides and flooded roads.
Trami is expected to move towards Vietnam over the weekend; however, Filipino authorities fear that winds over the South China Sea could push the storm back towards the Philippines by the weekend.
