Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Dr. Varsen Aghabekian Shaheen held a press conference with Ghanaian journalists in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
At the opening of the meeting, Shaheen conveyed the greetings of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and thanked Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama for his stance on the Palestinian cause, saying, “We thank the President for his support, especially for his support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.” She also welcomed the remarks of Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Ablakwa, who described the war in Gaza as a “genocidal war.”
Referring to the purpose of the visit, Shaheen said, “This visit aims to develop bilateral relations between the two countries in various fields, hold official contacts, and explore opportunities for future agreements that will benefit our peoples.”
Shaheen briefed the press on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, drawing attention to the ongoing severe humanitarian crisis, the practices of the occupying forces in the West Bank, the increase in settler attacks, and restrictions on Palestinians’ freedom of worship in Jerusalem.
Emphasizing that the priority is to make the ceasefire in Gaza permanent, Shaheen said, “Ensuring the entry of sufficient humanitarian aid, mobilizing international support for reconstruction and recovery, and rejecting all attempts to forcibly displace the Palestinian people are our fundamental priorities.”
As part of the program, Kwesi Pratt Junior, head of the solidarity campaign with the Palestinian people in Ghana, was awarded the “Medal of Appreciation” on behalf of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Shaheen also planted a tree symbolizing Palestine–Ghana friendship in the garden of the Embassy of the State of Palestine in Accra, reflecting the depth of friendship and solidarity between the two countries.
