Pope Appoints Trump Critic as Washington Archbishop
Vatican, January 6 (Hibya) – Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Robert McElroy, an outspoken advocate for migrants and a critic of Donald Trump’s first administration, as the next Archbishop of Washington, D.C.
The 70-year-old Cardinal McElroy is a strong supporter of Francis' priorities, including refugees, the environment, and welcoming LGBTQ Catholics. McElroy will succeed 77-year-old Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the first African-American Archbishop of Washington.
Early in Trump’s first term, McElroy, then a bishop, called on Catholics to oppose anti-immigrant agendas during a speech in Modesto, California.
“We must block those who want to send troops into our streets to deport undocumented people and tear parents from their families. We must stop those who portray refugees as enemies rather than as our brothers and sisters in dire need,” he said.
The Pope also appointed the first woman to head a Vatican department on Monday. Sister Simona Brambilla will lead the Holy See's office responsible for the religious life of nuns, monks, and priests.
