Putin: Efforts to Combat Black Sea Oil Spill Insufficient
Moscow, January 10 (Hibya) - Russian President Vladimir Putin described efforts to minimize the damage caused by the fuel spill in the Kerch Strait in Crimea as "clearly insufficient."
On December 15, the Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 fuel tankers sank in the Kerch Strait, causing a fuel spill. According to the latest data from the Russian Ministry of Transport, four tanks carrying petroleum products were damaged, and approximately 2.4 thousand tons of fuel spilled into the sea. Petroleum products also washed ashore.
In a meeting with government members on Thursday, Putin said: "From what I have seen and the information I have received, I have concluded that everything done to minimize the damage is clearly insufficient."
Putin added: "At first, they said all this would be done at the regional level, then they concluded it should be done at the federal level, and finally, they decided to declare a federal emergency."
Putin emphasized the need to create a relevant commission or center, led by officials directly working at the disaster site rather than at the local level.
