Romanian far-right pro-Russian candidate barred from presidential election
Bucharest, March 10 (Hibya) - Romania's Central Election Bureau on Sunday barred far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, known for his ties to Russia, from running in the May presidential election.
The bureau said it would explain the reasons for its decision later, rejecting objections from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which insisted that the staunch NATO skeptic should be allowed to run.
News service Digi24 reported that the election bureau voted 10 to 4 against allowing Georgescu to proceed. The decision can be appealed within 24 hours, with the Constitutional Court expected to rule by Wednesday.
Georgescu won the first round of last November’s presidential election, partly thanks to a successful TikTok campaign.
However, the Constitutional Court annulled his victory following allegations of a Russian operation that influenced the results.
The Trump administration, aligned with the Kremlin on foreign policy goals, supported the idea of allowing Georgescu to compete.
Trump’s senior adviser, Elon Musk, immediately reacted to the news from Romania on Sunday by tweeting: “This is madness.”
