NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said he spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and that NATO stands in full solidarity with Germany following the Russian hybrid attack that took place in Leipzig on August 14.

In a post on social media, Rutte said he had recently spoken with Merz and, referring to the attack in Leipzig, stated: “The evidence is clear.”

Welcoming the measures announced by Germany in response to the attack, Rutte said NATO would continue to strengthen its ability to deter any threat and defend all Allies.

Rutte said NATO would continue to maintain its readiness against a range of threats, including malicious activities seen in Leipzig and other parts of the Alliance.

Rutte said Russia’s attempts to intimidate NATO countries, weaken the Alliance’s unity and undermine its will to support Ukraine would fail, stressing that NATO’s support for Ukraine would continue.

In his statement, Rutte said, “Our support for Ukraine is unwavering, and our commitment to NATO’s collective defense is ironclad.”
