Seven countries urge the European Commission to accelerate its decision on Russian assets
Stockholm, December 8 (Hibya) – The leaders of Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, Finland, Poland, and Ireland sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, urging them to accelerate efforts to find solutions for the use of frozen Russian assets.
According to the text of the letter published by Politico, the leaders wrote: “Given the scale and urgency of Ukraine’s budgetary and military needs, we strongly support the European Commission’s proposal for a compensation loan financed by frozen Russian assets in the EU… Time is of the essence,” calling on the EU to take appropriate action.
The European Commission is persistently seeking the approval of EU member states for the use of Russian assets for Kyiv.
A loan ranging between €185 billion and €210 billion is under discussion, which Ukraine would be required to repay conditionally once the conflict ends and “when Moscow pays for the material damage.”
