Somali Minister Naastaro highlights green development and human rights at global forum
Beijing, June 12 (Hibya) - Somalia's State Minister for Family and Human Rights Development, Mohamed Osman Naastaro, said at the 2026 Global Forum on Human Rights Governance in Beijing that resilience and sustainability are fundamental to Somalia's future.
According to CCTV, Somalia's State Minister for Family and Human Rights Development, Mohamed Osman Naastaro, said in a speech at the 2026 Global Forum on Human Rights Governance in Beijing that resilience and sustainability are of fundamental importance to Somalia's future.
Speaking at the forum held on the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development, Naastaro stated that Somalia's path to progress is built on the resilience of its people and emphasized that green development is not a choice for the country but a fundamental human right and a necessity.
Naastaro stressed that Somalia's vision of green development goes beyond environmental policies and is directly linked to livelihoods, human dignity, and future generations. He noted that the country aims to transition from dependence on emergency aid to long-term resilience and is prioritizing investments in drought-resistant crops, irrigation systems, and water management under programs supporting climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods.
He added that these programs particularly aim to empower young people and women, noting that green development also means the right to work, the right to support one's family, and the right to live in a healthy environment.
More than 400 representatives from over 100 countries and international organizations attended the forum in Beijing. Discussions focused on strengthening human rights through development and issues related to global human rights governance.
