South Korean President put on trial
Seoul, February 20 (Hibya) - The trial for the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has begun in Seoul. Yoon is accused of attempting to declare martial law in the country last year. If convicted, he may be permanently removed from office.
The Constitutional Court of South Korea will decide whether President Yoon Suk-yeol will be permanently removed from office due to his attempt to declare martial law in the country.
Prosecutors argue that Yoon attempted a coup through this action, while his lawyers claim that the president had the legal right to declare martial law, making the investigation and charges against him unlawful from the outset.
The trial examines whether the implementation of martial law, which was overturned by parliament approximately six hours later, violated the constitution, which stipulates that such a measure can only be imposed in emergencies or wartime.
