Swedish army bans wind turbines over national security concerns
Stockholm, November 28 (Hibya) - The Swedish army blocked the establishment of fourteen wind turbine farms on the country’s coasts, deeming them a threat to national security.
Plans to establish fourteen wind farms on Sweden’s southeastern coast, in the Baltic Sea, were abandoned due to growing tensions between the West and Russia. The Swedish army banned their construction.
Military officials stated that the wind turbines would interfere with their surveillance equipment and reduce their ability to defend against an attack. The area where the turbines are banned faces the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, located between Lithuania and Poland in the Baltic Sea.
The country’s defense minister, Pål Jonson, said interference from the wind turbines would halve the response time to a missile attack, leaving Sweden only one minute to defend itself.
The government emphasizes the importance of wind energy development but notes that other areas along Sweden’s coast are more suitable for this purpose.
