Trump accuses EU of delaying customs tariff agreement with the US
Washington, May 27 (Hibya) - US President Donald Trump said the EU was "to put it mildly" delaying the signing of a customs tariff agreement with the United States and reiterated that the threat of a 50% import tariff on the bloc was an "extremely" satisfying move.
He praised the EU for "quickly setting meeting dates," but criticized the bloc in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, reigniting fears of a trade war with the region.
"I was extremely pleased with the 50% tariff imposed on the European Union, especially since our negotiations, to put it mildly, were progressing slowly," he said.
"I’ve just learned that the EU has called for quickly setting meeting dates. That’s a positive development, and I hope they do," he added, saying he would be "very happy" if the EU followed China in securing a deal.
In what seemed like another veiled threat on tariffs, Trump added that the US "has the authority to make a deal" if it "can’t reach an agreement" or is "treated unfairly."
The carrot and stick remark came as French President Emmanuel Macron warned Vietnamese students about the consequences of impulsive superpowers, in a reference to Trump’s chaotic tariff policies.
During his six-day tour of Southeast Asia, Macron said, "Everything can change at the whim of a superpower."
Macron commented on Trump’s policies in the US, saying tariffs were applied "depending on which side of the bed he woke up on."
