Trump: We are ready to respond to Iran if protesters are killed
Washington, Jan. 2 (Hibya) — U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Friday, “If Iran shoots and kills peaceful protesters, as is their habit, the United States of America will come to their aid.”
In the post published on the Truth Social platform, Trump did not elaborate on how Iran or the United States might intervene to protect protesters in the country, but said, “We are ready and prepared to act.”
The remarks came hours after reports said at least six people had been killed during roughly a week of escalating protests in Iran. The events began last weekend when business owners voiced frustration over poor economic conditions in the Islamic Republic.
Iran has for years been grappling with strikingly high inflation, fueled by sanctions imposed by the West over the hardline religious government’s nuclear program and its support for militant groups in the region.
Videos and photos shared on social media from Tehran and other cities show protesters marching in the streets since the beginning of the week, often chanting anti-government and pro-monarchy slogans and at times engaging in violent clashes with security forces.
