Trump's Special Envoy to Attend Gaza Talks
Washington, January 8 (Hibya) — According to the Axios news portal, Steve Witkoff, appointed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as Special Envoy for the Middle East, will participate in ongoing negotiations in Qatar’s capital, Doha, for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Trump stated yesterday at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago that if the hostage issue is not resolved by January 20, when he assumes office, "Hell will break loose in the Middle East, and this will not be good for Hamas or anyone else."
Witkoff noted during Trump’s press conference that "significant progress" had been made in the negotiations regarding Gaza and added, "I really hope we’ll have something good to announce on behalf of the President."
Hamas spokesperson in Lebanon, Ahmed Abdul Hadi, stated to Al-Mayadeen TV that all controversial and unresolved issues preventing an agreement on the Gaza Strip had been successfully resolved, and the signing now depends solely on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"The ball is now in Netanyahu’s court, especially after agreement has been reached on all points. Only he can block or sign this agreement," he emphasized.
Hadi added that mediators are awaiting Israel's official position and the signing of the agreement, noting: "Netanyahu no longer has any excuses to block this agreement as he has done in the past. Everything should proceed in the right direction, but we cannot be sure because Netanyahu is known for his deceptions."
Meanwhile, according to Axios, an Israeli official stated that disagreements remain on almost all issues being discussed between Israel and Hamas. He noted that it would be very difficult to reach an agreement by January 20, but expressed "cautious optimism" that an agreement could be reached in the coming weeks.
