Türk urges Guinea authorities to end violations ahead of elections
Geneva, December 26 (Hibya) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for the lifting of restrictions imposed in Guinea ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for Sunday.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Türk voiced concern over the intimidation of opposition actors, apparently politically motivated enforced disappearances, and restrictions on media freedom ahead of Sunday’s presidential elections in Guinea.
Calling on the authorities to immediately and impartially investigate all allegations of enforced disappearances, determine the fate and whereabouts of missing persons, and ensure accountability for any violations in line with international human rights law, Türk stated:
“In addition, an environment free from fear, coercion or pressure must be ensured, with freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and rights to political participation in the electoral process protected.”
