UK Withdraws from Energy Charter Treaty
The UK government has confirmed its withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty following the failure of efforts to reach an agreement on vital modernisation.
In its statement, the government announced that the UK would withdraw from the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) following the failure of its efforts to bring it in line with net-zero goals.
Signed in 1994, the Energy Charter Treaty was designed to encourage international investment in the energy sector by providing historical protection to investors in fossil fuels.
The UK withdrew from the treaty alongside 9 EU member states, including France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
