UN Security Council meets on killing of Hamas leader
New York, August 1 (Hibya) - Members of the UN Security Council met urgently on Wednesday evening at the urging of Algeria and China over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
At the meeting, most Members agreed that the killing was an escalation, and many expressed concern about the development of this escalation.
“We fear that the region is on the brink of a major war,” said Shino Mitsuko, Ambassador of Estonia to the UN.
Iran, the Palestinian Authority and Israel were also given time to speak. The first two condemned the killing as terrorism and provocation and said they believed Israel was behind it.
Israel did not officially claim responsibility for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, nor did it do so at the meeting.
Instead, Israel's UN representative Jonathan Miller used his speaking time to attack Iran, which he said is the world's largest sponsor of terrorism and uses Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis in Yemen to attack Israel from all sides.
Jonathan Miller also said that Israel has the right to defend itself.
Nothing concrete came out of the Security Council meeting.
