UNICEF: Polio vaccination campaign in Gaza reaches 189,000 children in first phase
Stockholm, September 5 (Hibya)—The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said the polio vaccination campaign in Gaza, which aims to vaccinate more than 640,000 children, exceeded expectations by the end of the programme's first phase.
Describing the campaign as a "rare bright spot" in the nearly 11-month war, Unicef said it had reached 189,000 children so far after more than 500 teams were deployed to central Gaza this week.
It said Israel and Hamas had observed limited pauses in the fighting to facilitate the campaign and that the UN agencies involved now hope to expand the campaign to the hardest-hit north and south of the region in the next two phases.
The campaign was launched after the first polio case in Gaza in 25 years was reported, leaving a 10-month-old boy who is now paralysed in the leg.
