US Congress Bans Staff from Using DeepSeek
Washington, January 31 (Hibya) - According to Axios, congressional offices have been warned not to use DeepSeek, a new Chinese chatbot that has disrupted the American AI market.
It is claimed that Congress is struggling to address security and administrative challenges posed by the rapid advancement of AI technology.
The Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives stated in a notice obtained by Axios: "Currently, DeepSeek is under review by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and is not authorized for official use in the House of Representatives."
The notice also warned that "threat actors are already using DeepSeek to distribute malware and infect devices with viruses."
"To mitigate these risks, the House has implemented security measures to restrict DeepSeek's functionality on all congressional-issued devices," the statement continued.
The notice further specified that employees are prohibited from installing DeepSeek on any official phone, computer, or tablet. This is not the first time the CAO has restricted the use of an AI product, but previously targeted companies were U.S.-based.
In 2023, the office imposed limitations on the use of ChatGPT, allowing offices to use OpenAI’s paid version only for specific tasks.
Additionally, in April last year, the CAO informed employees that they could not use Microsoft Copilot, though the company told Axios that it was developing a government-focused toolset in hopes of gaining approval.
