US Official: Azerbaijani Plane May Have Been Shot Down by Russian Air Defense System
Stockholm, December 27 (Hibya) - While Azerbaijan declared a day of mourning for the dozens of lives lost in the disaster, a US official told CNN that initial indications suggest that the passenger plane that crashed Wednesday in Kazakhstan may have been shot down by a Russian air defense system.
The US official said on Thursday that signs indicate that Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 was struck by a Russian system before crashing near the city of Aktau.
The official noted that if these initial indications are confirmed, it could be a case of mistaken identity, with poorly trained Russian troops firing recklessly in response to Ukraine's use of drones.
Authorities from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Russia, the three countries involved in the tragedy, have called on people not to speculate about the crash's cause until investigations are completed.
