United States (US) Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the conditions enabling Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado's safe return to her country were created through US-backed reconciliation talks.

In a statement posted on his social media account, Rubio said that hundreds of political prisoners had been released as part of the ongoing dialogue process and that hundreds of opposition politicians had returned to the country from exile.

"The freedoms of all parties must be respected"

Emphasizing that the United States expects the freedoms of all groups across Venezuela's political spectrum to be respected, Rubio called on all political actors in the country to support the negotiation process.

Rubio noted that the ongoing reconciliation talks represent Venezuela's most significant opportunity in the past three decades to achieve, through peaceful means, not only free and fair elections but also a lasting democracy.
