The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.49 percent to 54,349.12 points.
In contrast, the S&P 500 index fell 0.17 percent to 7,723.55 points, the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.83 percent to 26,363.44 points, and the Nasdaq 100 also lost 0.83 percent, falling to 29,487.79 points.
The Russell 2000 Index, which tracks small-cap companies, ended the day down 0.59 percent at 3,019.19 points.
