Zelensky on U.S. draft mineral deal: "I cannot sell Ukraine"
Stockholm, February 19 (Hibya) - At a press conference in Kyiv, Zelensky rejected Trump’s claims that the U.S. had given Ukraine $500 billion and opposed the idea of "returning minerals" through a mining exploration deal, saying: "This is not a serious conversation."
However, he said he was willing to work on a "serious document" if it included "security guarantees." "Okay, let’s make a deal. Let’s share depending on investment... but we need security guarantees," he added.
He said he was ready to make the U.S. proposal public but added: "I don’t think this will help our relationship. This document is not ready. It is beyond my authority, outside the Ukrainian constitution and laws, as it falls under the jurisdiction of New York law."
"But most importantly, there is not a single word about security guarantees."
"Look, we all want victory, we want Trump to win, we want Ukraine to win, we want us all to succeed."
"But there is no clarity here. Let’s write the percentages down. That was my proposal."
"But I am protecting Ukraine. I cannot sell it. I cannot sell our state," he said.
Zelensky emphasized that theoretical discussions about security guarantees outside NATO are difficult because there are too many formats and no time to build something new. He added: "We want security guarantees this year, we want to end the war this year. That’s why NATO is the natural guarantor of any agreement."
Zelensky stated that Ukraine is "much stronger than at the start of the invasion," and when asked what the best security guarantees for Ukraine were, he replied: "NATO is the strongest guarantee."
Zelensky also mentioned that he had discussed financing the Ukrainian army with European allies, that the EU was ready for these talks, but that he also had to "work on alternatives."
