Budrys: Russia is using history as a weapon
Prague, May 23 (Hibya)- Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys stated during a speech on European security that Russia is weaponizing history through disinformation and targeting democratic societies.
Speaking at a GLOBSEC panel, Budrys said that Russia is deliberately distorting historical narratives and conducting information manipulation campaigns.
Budrys stated that narratives such as “Ukraine never existed,” “The Soviets liberated the Baltic states,” and “Finland collaborated with the Nazis” have moved beyond marginal claims and become core elements of Russia’s information warfare.
Emphasizing that the Kremlin is using history as a “weapon” through AI-supported content and repurposed Soviet propaganda, Budrys said these methods are aimed at legitimizing wars, concealing crimes, and weakening democratic societies.
Budrys noted that Europe knows the cost of totalitarianism and that Ukraine’s experience, from the Holodomor to the current war, demonstrates the importance of historical truth.
Budrys also stated that the defeat of Nazism did not erase Soviet crimes and that impunity encourages new acts of aggression, calling on European countries to protect their shared historical memory.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Budrys also met in Prague with Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to discuss bilateral relations. The meeting focused on increasing cooperation between Lithuania and Hungary and strengthening solidarity within the European Union and NATO.
