Canada emphasizes international law and sovereignty at Arctic Council
Ottawa, October 11 (Hibya) - Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand highlighted the Arctic Council’s model of cooperation that places Indigenous peoples at the center of decision-making processes, saying international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity should form the foundation of stability in the Arctic region.

In a statement on social media, Anand said that after 30 years, the importance of this approach had grown further as geopolitical competition intensified.
Emphasizing that international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity must be preserved as the foundation of stability in the Arctic region, Anand said Canada was preparing to assume the chairship of the Arctic Council in 2029.
Anand said Canada’s responsibility was to uphold these principles and ensure that people living in the North have a decisive voice in shaping the region’s future.
