Costa: Today, we celebrate 40 years of shared progress and belonging
Strasbourg, January 1 (Hibya) – President of the European Council Antonio Costa marked the 40th anniversary of Portugal and Spain’s accession to the European Union, emphasizing that the two countries’ transitions to democracy strengthened European integration.
European Council President Costa reflected on the 40th anniversary of Portugal and Spain’s accession to Europe, saying: “Forty years ago, Portugal and Spain chose Europe. After long periods of dictatorship, both countries returned to Europe by building solid democracies.”
Costa noted that the accession of the two countries strengthened the European Union (EU) and reinforced its leading role in European integration, adding: “Today, we celebrate 40 years of shared progress and belonging. It is a meaningful milestone that reminds us that every enlargement makes our Union stronger.”
