Countries react to the U.S. attack on Venezuela
Stockholm, Jan. 3 (Hibya) — Officials from Russia, Iran and Cuba reacted to the U.S. attack on Venezuela, condemning the actions.
Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia Konstantin Kosachev stated that Venezuela does not pose a threat to the United States, neither militarily nor humanitarian-wise, nor in terms of crime and drug-related issues.
Noting that the current military operation and the actions carried out against Venezuela in recent days and weeks have no concrete basis, Kosachev said: “With these attacks, international law has been clearly violated. I am confident that a large part of the global community will decisively distance itself from the attack on Venezuela and condemn it.”
Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also announced that a statement would be issued regarding the U.S. attacks on Venezuela.
The reaction from Iran’s Foreign Ministry was that the attack constitutes a clear violation of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.
Meanwhile, Colombian President Gustavo Petro claimed that the United States had struck the Venezuelan parliament building. Petro added that they are following with deep concern reports of explosions and unusual air activity recorded in Venezuela in recent hours.
Reiterating Colombia’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, Petro emphasized respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, the prohibition of the use or threat of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
He also stated that the Colombian government has taken preventive measures in coordination with local authorities to protect civilians, ensure stability along the border, and prepare for possible humanitarian or migration needs. Emphasizing that Colombia’s Foreign Ministry will continue diplomatic contacts with the relevant countries and support initiatives aimed at objectively verifying events on multilateral platforms, Petro reiterated that peace and the protection of human life must be placed above any armed conflict.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez condemned what he described as the criminal U.S. attack on Venezuela.
Stressing that the structure of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace has been targeted, Bermúdez said that these actions amount to state terrorism against the Venezuelan people and the countries of the region, and shared a message of solidarity.
