Demonstrations in support of Palestine before the Eurovision second semi-final
Stockholm, May 10 (Hibya) - Thousands of demonstrators opposing Israel's participation in the Eurovision song contest filled the center of Malmö and the surroundings of Malmö Arena on Thursday evening.
During the demonstrations, the police force, which was far beyond the usual, attracted attention. Swedish police were also supported by security forces from neighbouring Denmark and Norway.
Police officials generally described the night as calm
At 16:00, a pro-Palestinian crowd occupied Stortorget Square and then marched for two hours via Triangeln towards Slottsparken. According to Malmö police, around 10 to 12 thousand people participated in the march. A slightly smaller demonstration was held near the arena at 5 p.m.
On the other hand, a musical show supporting Israel's participation was held in Davidshallstorg square starting from 18:00. Approximately 100 people gathered to support the Israeli delegation at the music competition.
On the other hand, Sertab Erener, who came first in Eurovision in 2003, appeared on stage as a guest singer in the second semi-final last night.
