ECHR finds Greece guilty of 'systematic' pushbacks of asylum seekers
Strasbourg, January 8 (Hibya) — The European Court of Human Rights has found Greece guilty of "systematic" pushbacks of asylum seekers and ordered it to compensate a woman who was forcibly returned to Turkey despite her attempts to seek protection in the country.
The Strasbourg-based court, in a ruling described as potentially groundbreaking, ordered the payment of €20,000 in compensation to the complainant, citing evidence of forced deportations at the EU's borders.
Tuesday's ruling stated: "At the time of the alleged incidents, there were strong indications that Greek authorities were systematically 'pushing back' third-country nationals to Turkey via the Evros border area."
