EU Commission President Von der Leyen: The opportunity for ceasefire and hostage exchange must not be missed
Brussels, October 4 (Hibya) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described Hamas’s announcement that it is ready for a hostage exchange and negotiations based on U.S. President Joe Biden’s proposal as “encouraging.”
Von der Leyen said in a statement on social media: “This moment must be seized. A ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all hostages now seem possible.”
The Commission President stressed that Europe will support all efforts to end the suffering of civilians, adding: “Europe will continue to support the two-state solution as the only realistic path to peace.”
Her statement came at a time when international diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in Gaza have intensified.
