Germany begins compiling a list of shelters for civilians
Berlin, November 26 (Hibya) – Germany is compiling a list of shelters that can provide emergency refuge for civilians amid increasing tensions with Russia.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the list will include underground train stations and parking garages, as well as government buildings and private properties.
A digital index of shelters and emergency refuges will be prepared, allowing people to quickly locate them using a planned phone application. The spokesperson also said in a press briefing that citizens will be encouraged to create protective shelters in their homes by converting basements and garages.
The spokesperson stated that this is a large project involving the Federal Civil Defense and Disaster Assistance Office and other authorities, which will take some time, and no specific timeline has been provided.
In a country with a population of 84 million, there are 579 shelters, most of which were built during World War II and the Cold War. These shelters previously provided refuge for 480,000 people out of approximately 2,000 shelters.
The spokesperson noted that the key points of the plan were agreed upon at a conference in June attended by senior officials, and a special group is researching the matter.
German authorities say the country is already experiencing a sharp increase in Russian espionage and sabotage activities. Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the conflict in Ukraine bears the characteristics of a "global" war and did not rule out the possibility of an attack on Western countries.
