Ghebreyesus: Communities must be at the center of pandemic preparedness
Geneva, December 27 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, on the occasion of the International Day of Pandemic Preparedness, that communities must be placed at the center of pandemic preparedness efforts.
Stating that pandemics begin in communities and also end there, Ghebreyesus called on countries to focus on local communities in their preparedness processes, noting that this approach will play a critical role in reducing the impact of future pandemics.
Ghebreyesus also noted that member states will have an opportunity in 2026 to further strengthen their pandemic preparedness capacity. He said that the Pathogen Access and Benefit-Sharing (PABS) system, one of the core elements of the WHO Pandemic Agreement, will enable rapid and equitable access to pathogen information and ensure fair sharing of benefits, making the world safer against future pandemics.
